Prescribed Burning Effect on the Richness, Diversity and Forest Structure of an Endemic Reforested Pinus canariensis Stand (Canary Islands)

چکیده

Forest fires are considered to play a fundamental role in structuring many forest plant communities. Prescribed burning is useful tool reduce fire risk by reducing the amount of fuel. Our main objective was analyse effects prescribed on undergrowth species richness and diversity as well other characteristic variables reforested Pinus canariensis stand. In areas where had been performed last 10 years, we established 8 plots 900 m2. Their respective control were nearby unburned environmentally similar areas. We systematically selected points each plot sampled presence, 1 m2 grids. For plot, basal area, mean canopy height average individuals measured. centred × m plots, shrub counted litter depth, cover herb cover. There no significant change number found when comparing burned vs. plots. Additionally, did not find any differences or composition, nor able determine associated with treatments. The area depth only parameters that revealed differences. Ecologically, good practice biomass accumulation P. plantations, little effect structure but positive for stand management, insofar reduction can help summer wildfires.

Natural recovery of genetic diversity by gene flow in reforested areas of the endemic Canary Island pine, Pinus canariensis

15 The endemic pine, Pinus canariensis, forms one of the main forest ecosystems in the 16 Canary Islands. In this archipelago, pine forest is a mosaic of natural stands (remnants 17 of past forest overexploitation) and artificial stands planted from the 1940’s. The 18 genetic makeup of the artificially regenerated forest is of some concern. The use of 19 reproductive material with uncontrolled ...

Prescribed Burning and Clear-Cutting Effects on Understory Vegetation in a Pinus canariensis Stand (Gran Canaria)

Prescribed fires are a powerful tool for reducing fire hazards by decreasing amounts of fuel. The main objective is to analyze the effects of prescribed burning on the understory vegetation composition as well as on the soil characteristics of a reforested stand of Pinus canariensis. The study attempts to identify the effects of the preburning treatment of cutting understory vegetation on the f...

Quantification of ozone uptake at the stand level in a Pinus canariensis forest in Tenerife, Canary Islands: an approach based on sap flow measurements.

Ozone uptake was studied in a pine forest in Tenerife, Canary Islands, an ecotone with strong seasonal changes in climate. Ambient ozone concentration showed a pronounced seasonal course with high concentrations during the dry and warm period and low concentrations during the wet and cold season. Ozone uptake by contrast showed no clear seasonal trend. This is because canopy conductance signifi...

The Effect of Altitude on the Pattern of Gene Flow in the Endemic Canary Island Pine, Pinus canariensis

Pinus canariensis is endemic to the western Canary Islands (NW coast of Africa), where it forms forest spanning an altitude from 500 to 2500 m. There are dramatic changes in environmental conditions (temperature, moisture and solar radiation) over short distances due to this elevation gradient in the Canary Island pine forest. Those differences in environmental conditions may lead to asynchrono...
